In his book, From
Coast to Coast: A Personal History of Radio in Canada, Sandy
Stewart says that this series was actually a touring variety
stage show, which was aired only occasionally. Starring, however,
were such notables as Frank Shuster, John Wayne, and Russ Titus.
After the war, Shuster and
Wayne went on to do the
Johnny Home Show, which dealt with the problems of
repatriation.
In Signing
On, Bill McNeil and Morris Wolfe quote Wayne and Shuster as
recalling that at the request of the army, they wrote a half-hour
script, with Jack Benny as
guest. From that beginning in Montreal, the army show evolved
into This Is The Army. They took it on the road across Canada,
and overseas in 1943. Their show was in the tradition of the
dumbells of the first world war.
